I found this advert in the 'Glamorgan Gazette' dated 23rd October 1964:
“THE MUSIC SHOP (E. & R. Holyome) 100-101 Commercial St., MAESTEG and at 55 John St., PORTHCAWL, FOR RECORDS, GUITARS, ELECTRONIC ORGANS, PIANOS, STRINGS and ACCESSORIES, DRUMS, etc.”
… and this announcement dated 24th October 1969:
“WE ARE MOVING! THE MUSIC SHOP (E. & R. Holyome), JOHN STREET, PORTHCAWL, ANNOUNCE THAT FROM MONDAY 27th OCTOBER TRADING WILL BE CONDUCTED FROM NEW AND LARGER PREMISES AT 126 John Street, Porthcawl (Next to Board Showroom). Come and Inspect our Record Browsers. LARGEST SELECTION IN THE AREA.”

The main store was in two double fronted adjoining shops i.e. X4 display windows. It was an Aladdin's cave for vinyl. They also stocked cassettes, 8-tracks and latterly some CDs. Many, many instruments from a harmonica to a bass guitar,a triangle to a set of drums or an electric organ. And sundries too, stylus, t-shirts, cleaning materials, protective covers...There was a relatively small section to browse. Most of the gold was kept behind the counter & in (seemingly endless) back rooms. You had to know what you wanted & they'd go get it for you. Ran for decades by a tiny (but very loud & knowledgeable) old lady, her hen-pecked (presumed) husband and her equally hen-pecked brother "Hedley". It was the only name you heard her shout.
The husband died around 1993 & the store hobbled along without new stock being acquired and finally closed circa 1995. The owners were ancient by then & retired to Porthcawl, where their branch store had been before.
Fondly remembered. They had EVERYTHING.
