The Whitechapel department store closed down in the 1960s, and had famously been split down the middle by a jewellery shop which had refused to budge during the construction of this impressive colonnaded building. In its heyday it rivalled the likes of Selfridges in Oxford Street, but its golden years were very brief . Alan Dein

... and this in the 'Hampstead News' dated 18th February 1954:
“WICKHAMS (C. BARKER) LTD., MILE END ROAD, LONDON, E.1. Tel. STEpney Green 1234. Stations: Stepney Green & Whitechapel. Buses: 10, 25, 96, 661, 663, 695. OPEN DAILY: 9-5.30 (Thursdays 9-1). Open all day Saturday till 6 o clock.”
