Volunteers was at the other end of town, run by Steve who lived with his family above the shop. Equally insane times were spent in Volunteers perusing the huge catalogues and ordering anything that looked interesting. Both Steve and Fiona were young old hippies and to me, an ex punk with a head full of something, they opened the doors to the sheer amount of music that was out there if you just went looking for it. And their shops both provided a refuge and sometimes a lifesaver from the chaos of the world.

I found this advert in the 'Kent & Sussex Courier' dated 15th December 1978:
“VOLUNTEERS DISCOUNT RECORDS - NOW OPEN. ALL RECORDS AT DISCOUNT PRICES. 6 UPPER GROSVENOR ROAD, TUNBRIDGE WELLS – 40061. We also pay TOP PRICES for your unwanted LP's.”

“Volunteers” also had a short-lived presence in The Walnuts shopping centre, Orpington. It opened around Summer 1983 as I had just left school and loitered there between signing-on and joining a YTS (Youth Training Scheme).

I vividly remember being in there listening to a new 12” single by a band called The Smiths. The single was This Charming Man 😬

I loitered there
