Comment: I remember coming along with my gran and mum to the Ibis Bookshop in the 1970s. They also sold records, mainly classical. It was a 'serious' shop, very still, not much fun for kids, obviously. But I did purchase my first records as a kid in Banstead, at Woolworths across the road!

Later I bought a compilation at the Ibis, of string instruments from the Middle East, which seemed funky at the time.

I found this in the 'Bookseller' dated 30th November 1985:
“BUSINESSES FOR SALE - IBIS Bookshop, Banstead, Surrey. For Sale. Old established general bookshop; also classical records, tapes and greetings cards. Central High Street position. Lease 10 yrs.”
...and this in the 14th December 1985 edition:
“THE Ibis Bookshop in Banstead should soon have a new owner. Founded by Irene Babbidge and Evelyn Folds-Taylor in 1938, it was bought by Martyn Goff in 1950.”
...and this in the 1st February 1986 edition:
“FOLLOWING the retirement of Norman Fielder, the Ibis Bookshop in Banstead has been bought by Jan Whitehead, who will manage it jointly with her husband Ray Whitehead.”
