Comment: There was Subway Records in the Tunsgate Arcade which seeemed a bit smart but not very well patronised, they had a window display with New Clear Days by local band the Vapors.

I found this advert in the 'Reading Evening Post' dated 5th December 1974: “SUBWAY RECORDS Under new management: 45 Winchester Street, Basingstoke. Telephone Basingstoke 29923.”

Subway Records in Basingstoke was a wonderful little shop. You had to go downstairs into a sort of basement area. Like going into a different world - a real underground experience. I was a dedicated regular in the 1970s. The staff were very knowledgeable. The shop had an excellent selection of progressive rock, jazz-rock and ECM jazz which interested me. I spent many happy hours in that shop chatting about music, learning about music, and listening to music on their headphones before buying stuff.
