I have just come across your website and it is great. Brings back so many memories.
One of my greatest memories of buying records as a teenager was from Spinadisc, Abington Square, Northampton. It was a fantastic record shop. This was the original location prior to moving to Abington Street to larger premises.
The Abington Square store was tiny. It had a narrow staircase leading up to counter, from what I can remember, with records on either side. I think the owner was called Dick Raybould. It attracted fans of all types of music and especially punks as they sold the records you couldn't buy from Woolworths or WH Smith. I bought many records from there and do recall buying the Band Aid 'Do They Know It's Christmas' single from there before the scheduled date of release as they had copies in the shop.
Going to record shops like Spinadisc was a huge part of my youth and it has been very sad to see the demise of such shops. The youth of today will never appreciate how good those times were.

Comment: I have such fond memories of both working in, and visiting Spinadisc in Northampton. Back when record shops were THE coolest place to be.

Name:Trevor Little
Comment: Got a great many Motown records from there. Their original shop in Derngate was far better for singles.

I found this advert (with the same logo as the 83-87 Lower Precinct, Coventry branch) on p8 of the 'Northampton Chronicle & Echo' dated 7th October 1987: “FULL SELECTION OF NEW SINGLES AND GOLDEN OLDIES £1.90 - SPINADISC RECORDS - 75a ABINGTON STREET, NORTHAMPTON. TEL: 31144. OPEN MON - SAT 9.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m.” ... and this feature on the same page: “FOCUS ON SPINADISC - Spinadisc Records, the popular Northampton music shop, opened large new premises at 75a Abington Street, yesterday, much to the relief and delight of Dick Raybould. The sole owner of the company, Mr. Raybould developed the business to such an extent that, despite the disadvantage of being outside the main shopping stream, his shop in Abington Square became too small. “Our new shop has four times more retail space and now our main aim is to have the biggest and widest selection of music,” he said. “If a record is available we will get it.” There is also an article about SPINADISC (with a photo of the Abington Street shop) in 'The Northampton Chronicle' at this link:
https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/former-staff-bring-iconic-spinadisc-name-back-into-business-with-online-record-shop-2947102
... which says: “Originally opening in 1973 and run by the Raybould family, at its peak Spinadisc had branches in Northampton, Rugby and Coventry. Its Abington Street branch closed in 2005.”

I have fond memories of Spinadisc from when I lived in Northampton right after university (1989-92). I worked on the high street and was a regular visitor. I still have a Spinadisc Records slip mat on one of my turntables.
