I found this advert on page 11 of the 'Birmingham Daily Post' dated 6th December 1939:
“SCOTCHERS - PIANOS, PLAYER-PIANOS, RADIOGRAMS, RADIO SETS, PORTABLE RADIO AND GRAMOPHONES, PIANO-ACCORDIONS, DRUM OUTFITS, UKELELES, VIOLINS, Etc. SETS OF RECORDS, RECORD ALBUMS, CARRIERS AND CABINETS FOR MUSIC AND RECORDS, SHEET MUSIC AND BOUND BOOKS, PIANO STOOLS. EASY PURCHASE TERMS. PART EXCHANGES. SCOTCHERS, LTD., CORPORATION STREET (opp. Martineau Street). OPEN ALL DAY SATURDAYS. Tel.: CEN. 1301. Established in the year 1793.” ... and this piece on the same page:
“MUSIC FROM SCOTCHER’S: Scotcher’s establishment in Corporation Street might be described as a home of home entertainment. Those who seek a piano or a radio and those after less expensive smaller instruments, gramophone records or works of music, will find an admirable variety. Well-known pianos like those of Broadwood, or Chappell or Challen, piano-players (and a selection of rolls), with other makes are on view, and in the radio department leading makers (H.M.V. and Marconi, R.G.D., Pye, Bush, &c.), are represented by sets, consoles and radiograms. Battery portables, with portable gramophones and records, are said to be increasingly popular, perhaps for use in the air raid shelter.”
