I grew up in Hatfield and I'm pretty sure it was there from about 1970.
As a kid I used to go in just to gawp at the guitars on the wall.
It was run by a couple of what I thought were hippies, but in retrospect probably just had long hair like so many others at the time.
I loved it in there - they had such a great range of music, Blue Beat and ska before 2-Tone was a thing, loads of 60's stuff and prog. By 1977 they'd embraced punk and had a great 7" section

I found this listing in the 'Hertford Reformer & Mercury' dated 6th February 1981: “HATFIELD: Rag Records 10 Market Place 65013.”

Weirdly enough I just found two red paper Rag Records bags in two charity shops which are now directly under the old record shop.

My very first Record Store, worked there on Saturdays eventually managing the place with Doris, bringing it "back from the dead". We saved the place and made it vibrant and happening, then handed it back to one of the 3 owners, Peter Augsberg after his couple of kibbutz years. Went on to manage many record retail stores. And have a had a long and successful career on the other side of the music business. But this is where I started a long haired hippie with a passion for music back in 1970. Thank you.
