I found this piece in the 'Evening Despatch' dated 10th June 1953: “PERSONAL VISIT OF DAVID HUGHES The popular entertainer (appearing at the Birmingham Hippodrome this week) will visit Lewis’s Record Department (Basement) at 3 p.m. tomorrow to autograph his latest recordings. LEWIS’S LTD., BIRMINGHAM 4.”

I recently acquired some old 10” records which were bought from the Lewis record shop, price 2’11.

Comment: In the basement of the Lewis's Ltd store on Bull Street, the record department offered an eclectic mix of music which you could listen to in the famous music booths. A touch of Americana in Brum!
This was not a John Lewis store. It was Lewis’s Ltd and was owned by Sir Charles Clore who also owned Selfridges. I worked there for a few months after leaving school in 1954.
