In the mid 60s The HMV record shop in Ilford was where I spent many a Saturday afternoon.
From the outside, it looked a bit more formal than other local record shops but the massive plus was that inside there were the listening booths that 4 people could squeeze into. The staff would play the albums from behind the desk, you’d have to pop out and get them to turn it over to hear side two.
I think a single cost about six bob. Money was always tight so records were precious items. Walking home with that little disc in its paper sleeve was a source of real excitement, as was playing it on my sister’s Dansette when I got home. Happy days.
