Comment: Pete Waugh.
Comment: Owned and run by Bev Bevan of The Move and Electric Light Orchestra fame, the shop was located in Sparkhill.

I used to work as a rep for Polydor records calling on all the record stores in the Birmingham area. One day I called on Heavyhead and a guy sitting at the counter eating his sandwiches said “I almost signed for your label.” I said, “Who are you?” He said, “Jasper Carrott.” I said, “With a name like that you have no chance!” What do I know?

A search of the British Newspaper Archive website found an advert for Heavyhead:
“OPEN! BEV BEVAN’S ‘HEAVYHEAD’ RECORD SHOP 803 STRATFORD ROAD SPARKHILL BIRMINGHAM.”
(Birmingham Mail, 26th February 1971)
... and also a notice in the Birmingham Daily Post, dated 3rd August 1976:
“IN THE MATTER OF HEAVYHEAD RECORDS LIMITED AND IN THE MATTER OF THE COMPANIES ACT 1948 CREDITORS VOLUNTARY WINDING-UP NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN.”

I was working at Prestages garage on Stratford and watched from the office as the shop was taking shape. One day I saw a chap going in and went over to find out what was happening. It was Bev Bevan, he told me to come across on opening day and have a drink. I did and members of the Idle Race, Raymond Froggatt and the Move were there. I seem to recall Raymond had a big car out front with cow horns ? It was a great place to go in my teens.
