Back in the day my first musical experience happened across the road, where Harvey’s record shop used to beJazzie B
So, in the shop window I can see album covers for:
Star Time - Various Artists (Sunshot) Would love a copy of this!
Love of the Common People - Nicky Thomas (Trojan - could be blue or orange/white label I guess)
The Heat Is On - Tito Simon (forget what label but I've got it somewhere)
Tropical Sounds volume 1 - Various Artists (Tropical)
Madness - Mighty Maytones (Burning Sounds)
Barry Biggs & the Inner Circle (Trojan)
Possibly one of the African Dub volumes top right? It looks familiar but I can't place it.
Time wise these are all over the place so maybe he did secondhand?
About 20 years ago a guy from Barking came on the now-defunct Trojan forum to say he had some vinyl and CDs to give away if anyone wanted.
I arranged to meet him in East Ham a couple of times and he passed over what he had, including probably thirty or so I Roy 45s including
a couple on Third World that he told me he'd bought from Harvey in Green Street back in 1978.
From other bits I've seen on social media, seems like Harvey was the top place for Reggae in East London aside from PfM. Mark Grffiths (2024)
Harvey's was a small-ish shop run by Harvey Zeto, who was an energetic, enthusiastic, cheerful, and hard-working guy with a love for soul music. I'd often hear "Joy And Pain" by Maze blasting out from his shop door.
He had a sign on the wall saying something like, "Heaven helps those who help themselves, but Heaven help anyone helping themselves to anything in this shop."
After a year or so, Sotosound moved to larger premises in King's Cross, so we lost touch. As far as I can tell, however, Harvey later switched to jewellery.
