Comment: Terrible shop, mainly golden oldies but I did buy some gems there.

Comment: This sold cards as well but the right-hand side as you went in was always worth a look through the racks (as any record shop was back then). I do recall buying my first new Tamla Motown 45 there (Jimmy Mack) in the summer of 1981 and my Jam Beat Surrender double pack came from there too.

They had a second branch in Kinson (which can be added to this database) at 1436 Wimborne Road. I shopped here first (late 1970s) as it was my local. This changed hands, becoming Discs & Cards and then Kinson Record Centre.

Where was my head at, the record counter was on the left as you went in! To be fair I was thinking back to actually being in the shop (like you do) and typed as I was (in my head) looking towards the front door. Putting yourself back in these shops and remembering what you were buying back then is what this is all about, isn't it?

Comment: I discovered this shop around 1982; it definitely must have been a chart return shop, racks full of shiny new 12" singles pushed by the companies. In 1982 Warners were really trying to break Prince so the Little Red Corvette 12" I bought here was just 99 pence. The smell of all the new 12" vinyl was intoxicating; the man who seemed to be in charge was grumpy and cynical.

I found this picture caption on page 3 of the Compact Disc supplement in 'Music Week' dated November 3, 1984:
“FIRST SIGHT of the new range of PolyGram CD display material designed to back up the forthcoming joint £800,000 ad campaign with Philips using the theme "CD is the best way to get music out of your system". This window and/or in-store display at Disc Music Centre, Bournemouth, uses most of the items available in the merchandising package.”

i've been doing some research on bournemouth record shops, and i'm fairly sure the "disc" record shops in winton and kinson there were actually seperate businesses that were active at the same time in the early 80's!

"disc music centre" was in the heart of winton at 413-417 wimborne rd, and i remember visiting it several times when in that part of town whilst living in bmth at that time. although never actually buying anything to my recollection, as although apparently an independent shop it made the record depts in chains like woolies look almost cool! i have a vague memory of it also being a newsagent, and selling toys and whatnot in addition to records

according to an advert they placed in the local alternative magazine "coaster", "discs and cards" was located at 1436 wimborne road in kinson. presumably the "cards" they sold were for birthdays and suchlike, but as far as the "discs" were concerned the ad notified they specialised in rock n roll ones (bournemouth actually had a healthy) rock and roll revival scene at the time)- also operating a mail order service in that regard, and offered a stock of (presumably imported) rare US labels such as "ace" and "bison bop"
