Comment: I have an uncertain memory that Barkers took over Austick's shop at the western side of the junction of the Headrow with King Charles Street, and that they had a record department in the basement. I am certain that records were sold down there, my uncertainty is about whether or not it was by Barkers. Perhaps this will jog someone's memory who does remember clearly.

Comment: Since my early record collecting days (yes, 78s! ) I've spent a fair bit of time in record shops, starting with Barkers (north-east corner of Lands Lane and Albion Place) and Vallances when they had two shops, one on the south side of Queen Victoria Street (Vicar Lane end ) which sold musical instruments and the other selling records in the same position on King Edward Street.

I found an advert in the ‘Yorkshire Evening Post’ dated 2nd January 1954:
“Gramophone Records. The largest stocks in the largest and most comfortable department in Leeds. BARKERS - R. BARKER & CO., LTD. 6-8, ALBION PLACE, LEEDS.”

I remember Barker's on The Headrow in Leeds very well. They used to have an import music service from Holland. I ordered many LPs from Holland including Earth & Fire (a progressive rock band), Kayak, Maywood, Diesel. A very useful shop indeed. A great shame it is no longer there.

The Barkers paper bag with the black discs and orange centres was my first design and finished artwork job in advertising, 1967 or 1968 while working at Hewitt/Taylor Design Studio in Leeds.
