Comment: Our one department store, which closed many years ago, one of the first casualties of the new Eastgate shopping mall. They had a good-sized record department, and I think they must never have bothered returning unsold stock to the distributors - every so often the entire basement of the store would be given over to a Record Clearout Sale where stuff they must have had for decades was put out to grass for pennies. I think one time they even had a rack of new-old-stock 78s (in 1980!) I remember coming out of Arnotts one day in 1980 with a huge stack of EMI and Bell label flops priced at 3p each.

“ARNOTTS INVERNESS Are looking to recruit DYNAMIC DEPARTMENT MANAGERS with previous retail experience. Apply in writing, enclosing C.V. to J. McLaughlan, Assistant Store Manager, Arnotts 7-17 Union Street, Inverness.”
