Re: Poplar Road, Kings Heath


Hobdays sold records and musical instruments from their shop in Poplar Road in the Fifties and Sixties, not sure when they closed but they had another shop in Oak Tree Lane Selly Oak, which continued in business for many years.

In more recent times the Poplar Road shop became Off Limits which sold CDs only, I took this photo in 1992.

I found a mention of Alfred Hobday's record shop in the 'Birmingham Mail' dated 19th April 1997:
“... another port of call for the youthful of those days was Alfred Hobday’s record shop, where I bought a record of 'The Devil’s Gallop' - the Dick Barton signature tune.”
